Club owner, Walter Brown, named the team 'Celtics' from the old 'Original Celtics' in New York (1914-40). Arnold 'Red' Auerbach was hired by Brown to coach the team for the 1950-51 season. When the Chicago Stags folded, its three guards names were put in a hat. Auerbach picked Bob Cousy's name out of the hat. In 1950, the Celtics chose Chuck Cooper of Duquesne as the first-African-American draft choice in the NBA. Brown and Auerbach selected Bill Russell out of the University of San Francisco in the 1956 draft and thus began a legacy in basketball never to be duplicated. In their inaugural season, the Boston Celtics finished 22-38. Although the team did not achieve a winning record, they had many colorful and interesting players.
